Walking in Cornwall

Walking in Cornwall
The farm shop was 200 yards from the door of our cottage. Fresh eggs, home cured bacon - a day's walking demands a good breakfast!

And if you're planning a walking holiday in Cornwall, you're simply spoilt for choice - whether it's mapping out your route, or deciding which of our picture-perfect holiday cottages to stay in. A personal recommendation is to rent a holiday cottage in Cornwall with a company such as Rent My Cottage.

Cornwall offers over 300 miles of the South West Coast Path to walk along. And an inland path network of more than 2,400 miles. No walker is ever going to get bored in Cornwall.

Lonely Planet have just named Cornwall's South West Coast as one of the World's greatest tourist attractions. The route will take you through five areas of outstanding natural beauty, two world heritages sites and a national park. No two days will ever be alike.

One of my favourite Cornish walks is along the headland, north of Polzeath - beautiful views across the Camel Estuary, and if you go in summer the tamarisk flowers will be in full bloom. Or head down to Chapel Porth and take the walk past the dramatic mine ruins and on to St Agnes Beacon. In the far north of Cornwall there's a beautiful walk from Crackington Haven, once a port for landing lime and coal for the local lime kiln.

But you might prefer to head inland, onto the moors. Get ready for an incredible mix of flora and fauna, archaeology and history - and an amazing mixture of landscapes. Bodmin Moor is a world in itself - the harsh beauty of winter transforming to the gently rolling hills of summer. Why not walk the Copper Trail - a relatively new walk that pays homage to the great copper mining boom, once centred on the villages of Minions and Caradon. Today, Minions is probably home to the greatest concentration of historical sites and artefacts on the whole of the moor.

But you know, you don't need to be a dedicated walker to enjoy Cornwall. Why not take the children? There are 39 Treasure Trails across Cornwall. They're a great way to get you (and the kids!) out and about exploring - and solving an intriguing mystery at the same time! Who knows? You might even wear the kids out for once.

And then it'll be back to your cottage - and whether it's overlooking the beach, nestled in a picturesque fishing village or isolated on the moor, you'll always find your perfect holiday home in Cornwall. Time to relax, watch the sun go down - and plan tomorrow's walk!
